Nissan has fitted its just-released 2013 Altima with a clever, all-new tire inflation system that will alert drivers when tires are underinflated and also help them pump the tire back up to the proper air pressure.
Though low tires may be low on the list of things that most drivers worry about, the fact is that improperly inflated tires can add 3.3% to a vehicle’s MPG ratings and also triple the risk of an accident occurring. This new system tells the driver which tires are low, what its current air pressure is, and also what the optimum pressure should be.
The feature that is truly new is the way it helps drivers add just the right amount of air to the droopy tire by flashing its lights when air is going into the tire and then chirping the horn when the pressure is just right.
This new system will soon be added to the 2012 electric Leaf and the Quest minivan. Within the next 15 months, all of its new cars will have this feature. Talking about this, Pierre Loing, vice president for product planning of Nissan North America, said, “By making this unique Nissan innovation available on all our future products, the guessing and the gauge vanish for our customers.”
